Mace - ancient European weapon of XIII-XVII centuries which meant to produce a fracture wounds. The first maces had a total length of about 60 cm and a triangular cross-section of the ribs. Their weight reached 400 g and length was about 70 centimeters and was usually held with one hand for the handle, the separated metal ring, serving also as guards. Sometimes maces were equipped with a hook to capture enemy weapons. Mace as weapon evolved into the ceremonial mace - a highly ornamented object carried by a sovereign or other high official in civic ceremonies and intended to represent the official's authority. Modern processions often feature maces, as on parliamentary or formal academic occasions.

A scepter is a symbolic ornamental object held by a ruling monarch, a prominent item of royal regalia. With the advent of Christianity the scepter was often tipped with a cross instead of eagle. In England from a very early period two scepters have been concurrently used, and from the time of Richard I they have been distinguished as being tipped with a cross and a dove respectively. In France the royal scepter was tipped with a fleur de lys, and the other, known as the main de justice, had an open hand of benediction on the top. For the coronation of Charles II of England new scepters were made, and though slightly altered, they continue to be in use.
